SIS10122 Certificate I in Sport and Recreation

The Certificate I in Sport and Recreation (SIS10122) course focuses on the basic skill sets for students to be able to gain employability skills necessary to participate in the sport and recreation industry in areas such as recreation activities, event support, equipment management and workplace readiness. There are no entry requirements for this qualification. 

This course runs over 2 years (students working at a higher level may complete the course in 12–18 months) and the 7 units of competency that make up this course are clustered across 3 assessment books that students are required to complete focusing on preparing for work, assisting with recreation sessions and planning a recreation event. 

Within these assessment books students are required to participate in a variety of theory and practical activities to gain competency in each unit including oral questioning, workplace observations, planning activities, portfolios of evidence and practical participation in recreation and event-based activities.

Students are required to participate in a variety of projects specific to individual school contexts across sport, recreation and community-based activities. Students within the course have the opportunity to learn various sport and recreation skills including:

  • preparing for employment and workplace participation
  • planning and managing personal work schedules
  • communicating effectively with others
  • participating in safe workplace practices
  • assisting with recreation and sporting activities
  • preparing, issuing and maintaining activity equipment
  • planning and supporting recreation events
  • working as part of a team
  • following workplace procedures and instructions
